Remember These Do's and Don'ts

Do follow your doctor’s instructions.

Do take your daily dose of Targretin capsules with your evening meal.

Do read all safety information provided on this Web site and with Targretin capsules, and read the full prescribing information and patient instructions.

Do ask your doctor if there is something you don’t understand.

Do try to control your triglyceride [try-GLIH-ser-eyed] and cholesterol [kuh-LESS-tuh-rawl] levels.


Your doctor may suggest that you get medication to control high fat levels in the blood.

Your doctor may also suggest making lifestyle changes, which may include:
  • A healthy diet
  • Regular exercise
  • Stop smoking
  • Limit alcohol intake

Do store Targretin capsules at room temperature, away from heat or flame

Do keep Targretin capsules out of reach and sight of children

Do always swallow each Targretin capsule whole

Don’t take Targretin capsules before talking to your doctor if:

You are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.

You have or previously had an inflamed pancreas (pancreatitis).

You are breastfeeding.

You are taking gemfibrozil (Lopid®)*, a medication to reduce high triglyceride and cholesterol (fats) levels in the blood.

You are taking tamoxifen (Nolvadex®)*.

Don’t forget to tell your doctor if: You are allergic to retinoid medications, such as Accutane® (isotretinoin)*, Soriatane® (acitretin)*, Tegison® (etretinate)*, Vesinoid® (tretinoin)*

You have or ever had high triglyceride (a fatty substance) levels in your blood.

You have diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes).

You have a history of or currently have gall bladder disease.

You have or have had any liver disease.

You regularly drink more than a small amount of alcohol.

You are currently taking any prescription medication, especially for fungal infections, bacterial infections, or seizures.

You eat a lot of grapefruit or drink a lot of grapefruit juice.

Don’t take more than the recommended daily dietary allowance of vitamin A (4000 to 5000 International Units). Vitamin A in large doses may cause side effects similar to those of Targretin capsules. Ask your pharmacist if you take multivitamins and you are not sure how much vitamin A they contain.

Don’t use or handle Targretin capsules if the capsules are broken or leaking. Promptly notify your pharmacy or place of purchase.

Don’t chew Targretin capsules or dissolve them in liquid or in your mouth.

Don’t use Targretin capsules after the expiration date printed on the packaging.

Don’t take Targretin capsules if you are allergic to this medicine (bexarotene).
